What would you do if one of your loved ones stopped breathing, or was seriously injured in an accident? The best response to a medical emergency is to stay calm and call 911. Once you know help is on the way, you can start CPR.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or "the kiss of life" is an essential skill to learn. However, the traditional "kiss" way of performing CPR is not the only method that can be used. Hands-free CPR is being taught in some countries, as an alternative to "rescue breath" CPR. However, if someone does not know the correct technique to perform traditional CPR then hands-only resuscitation is definitely better than nothing.

To perform normal CPR, you should push down on the casualty's chest with the heel of your hand. Push down rapidly, but firmly. Every 30 compressions, lift the chin of the injured person to clear the airway. Next, pinch their nose, and put your mouth over theirs so that when you breathe out no air escapes. Now, breathe out for approximately one second, and watch their chest rise. Perform this breathing action twice.

Repeat the process of chest compressions and breaths until help arrives. If you are not happy with, or unable to perform, rescue breath CPR, simply focus on doing the chest compressions. If you are strong enough, you should try to perform 100 chest compressions per minute.

Performing CPR can be more tiring than you might expect. Remember, there is a life at stake, and your actions count; so try to keep going as long as you can. If you feel like you cannot keep going, look around to see if someone else nearby can assist you or take over for a minute or two.

Being able to act quickly and decisively in an emergency saves lives. However, the best type of CPR is still CPR with rescue breaths. Acting quickly and correctly when someone is seriously ill could buy the ambulance enough time to get there so that the person can get the attention that they need to save their life. If you don't know how to perform CPR yet yourself, then you should definitely look into taking a first aid course that covers basic issues such as what to do if someone is choking, bleeding, or has stopped breathing; this basic knowledge could come in handy one day.
